• Welcome to my course webpage for English 3. Here, parents/guardians and students have permanent access to our course syllabus and calendar. The calendar is a great resource for class assignments, homework readings, and reminders of upcoming assessment dates and project/essay deadlines.

English 3 is a survey of American Literature from the pre-colonial period up to the present day. No single class can hope to fully cover the literature of an entire country - much less a country with such a rich literary tradition as ours. Instead, think of this class as a sequence of carefully selected texts designed to take students on a journey through American history with a specific focus on the diversity of perspectives our nation contains. While we will study some works considered necessary and essential classics, the words "necessary" and "essential" imply that other perspectives and works are somehow less "essential" to the story of America. Each new wave of people arriving in our country has added to the richness and beauty of the American identity, and this chorus of voices seems "essential" to me if we are to gain any insight into what it means to be American.

Beyond the reading materials, there will be a strong focus on analytical, research, and writing skills in the course. By the end of English 3, students will be prepared for writing at the collegiate level, both for English courses and any others. Every person has a story to tell, and the capacity to notice things nobody else can. I am excited to see what we will discover together this year!
