NATURAL HELPERS
The Natural Helpers consists of thirty-two students and seven staff members that have been trained. Each year we take twenty-six new students. Officers will be elected after the October training retreat. The Natural Helpers program was developed several years ago as a way of helping adolescents within a school environment to deal with the problems they confront. Natural Helpers include a cross-section of students and adult staff members identified and selected through an anonymous school-wide survey. After these individuals are identified, they are invited to participate in the Natural Helpers program. They receive at least thirty hours of training in communication and decision making skills, information on major problems facing students, use of local resources and awareness of their limits as helpers. Natural Helpers work in a variety of roles in the school, from providing one on one listening, support and referral, to organizing school wide preventive activities and educating programs. We do drug and alcohol prevention programs during Red Ribbon Week, pre-prom assemblies and activities throughout the year to promote a drug and alcohol free life style. Natural Helpers are involved in the community by participating in the Relay for Life to raise monies for the American Cancer Society and other organizations.
